Stevenage midfielder Charlie Lee rescued a point with a late equaliser against strugglers Tranmere, who remain in the League Two relegation places.
Rovers, a point behind Hartlepool, led 2-1 from Kayode Odejayi's header and Jennison Myrie-Williams's opportunist finish before Lee struck.
Play-off chasers Stevenage had gone ahead early on when Ben Kennedy's corner was headed home by Bira Dembele.
The result leaves the home side two points behind seventh-placed Plymouth.
Stevenage manager Graham Westley told BBC Three Counties Radio:
"Great start and a great finish. It was going to be tough for us to play, playing without a recognised forward.
"We got off to a solid start and we were performing well. You couldn't say they earned their goals, we were masters of our downfall. I thought in the second half we showed a lot of positivity.
"The facts are you have to win promotion. It's winning that counts. Drawing games isn't winning. Winning has got that little bit extra, and at the moment we're just falling short of those winning standards.
"The players have got it in them. They're in the young stages of their careers. It's just about finding that little bit of confidence and that little bit of aggression to go a little bit further."
