Bolton Wanderers 1-1 Blackpool

Eidur Gudjohnsen
Gudjohnsen scored for Iceland in the 3-0 win over Kazakhstan last Saturday and has scored five goals since rejoining Bolton

Eidur Gudjohnsen scored an injury-time equaliser as Bolton denied bottom-of-the-table Blackpool a first away win of a miserable Championship season.

Gudjohnsen turned the ball in from a yard in the sixth of six added minutes following Barry Bannan's cross.

Blackpool had looked set for just their fifth league victory this term thanks to an early Michael Jacobs strike.

But Bolton dominated from 25 minutes onwards and wasted a series of good chances before Gudjohnsen's leveller.

The former Chelsea and Barcelona striker's goal means the Trotters move 10 points clear of the bottom three and further eases any relegation fears.

But although Blackpool are still not yet down, they are 16 points off safety with six games to go and realistically needed more than a draw.

A win would have at least given some minor comfort to their supporters after a torturous season on and off the pitch.

Seasiders suffer travel sickness
Blackpool's four previous Championship wins this season all came at home and all finished 1-0. The Tangerines beat Cardiff and Birmingham last year and then had back-to-back wins over Millwall and Brighton in January.

They certainly deserved their ninth-minute lead after a bright start.

Jamie O'Hara had two strikes on goal and Gary Madine also sent an effort just over the bar before on-loan Wolves winger Jacobs raced on to O'Hara's through-ball to smash in the opener.

Jacobs, Peter Clarke and Andrea Orlandi could easily have added to the lead before Bolton finally started to threaten.

Trotters defender Tim Ream wasted a good chance and the dangerous Adam Le Fondre teed up an opportunity for Liam Feeney, whose shot was well saved by Joe Lewis.

And the Tangerines goalkeeper then made a stunning reaction save from Paddy McCarthy, who failed to make a proper connection with a close-range header.

Bolton, with veteran former England striker Emile Heskey leading the line, began to seize control after the break.

Heskey's presence and ability to bring others into play allowed the hosts the platform to dominate possession and they poured forward.

A 25-yard strike by Thomas Walker tested Lewis, Heskey almost converted a teasing cross and Bannan hit the post from six yards.

A rare Blackpool attack saw home keeper Ben Amos fail to collect a free-kick and Clarke volley the ball wildly over from close range.

But Bolton were still dominating and ruined Blackpool's day when Gudjohnsen netted as the visitors appealed in vain for offside.

Blackpool manager Lee Clark:

"We're disappointed, we're frustrated.

"I'm really pleased with the level of performance of the players but we want wins on the board, just to get some confidence levels back to where they should be.

"It's a strange one because we've played so well and we've got a draw, which you'd normally take away from home, but it feels like a defeat because of the late, late goal."

Michael Jacobs
Jacobs joined Blackpool on loan from Wolves in mid-March and his first-half goal was his first in a total of 16 appearances this season
