York are now six points clear of the Football League relegation zone thanks to a goalless draw at Oxford.
The U's, who had been in relegation trouble before back-to-back wins, are now 11 points clear and almost mathematically safe.
City's David Winfield had a header cleared off the line by Michael Collins.
Danny Rose almost scored an Oxford winner but he volleyed wide after being set up by substitute Pat Hoban.
York City manager Russ Wilcox told BBC Radio York:
"I think to come away from home against a good side and to get a point with a clean sheet is always rewarding.
"That's the key from today. First-half we weren't fluent, second-half we got on the front foot and looked like we were going to score.
"Then you come off and see the other results and it's a point nearer where we want to be."
