Nichols, who is Exeter's top goalscorer with 14 this season, was dismissed for kicking out at an opponent in the
"I didn't see what he did, but I've been told that he flicked out at the player," Tisdale told BBC Radio Devon.
"It's a pretty soft way to earn yourself a three-match ban," added the Exeter boss.
Nichols will miss the games with top-eight sides Luton, Newport and Shrewsbury as the club aim to close the five-point gap between themselves and the final League Two play-off place.
"His game was a little untidy at times and maybe that frustration built off the back of his game not being as tight as it could be," Tisdale said.
