Chesterfield boosted their League One play-off hopes by thrashing relegation-threatened Colchester United at the Proact Stadium.

Gary Roberts's strike broke the deadlock before a Sam Clucas brace put the hosts 3-0 up after just 17 minutes.

After the break, Dan Gardner added a fourth with a long-range shot before he set up Jimmy Ryan for their fifth.

Roberts sealed his second and the Spireites' sixth from the spot after he was tripped by Chris Lewington.

Chesterfield are now seven points ahead of Rochdale in seventh, while the U's are three points from safety in 23rd.
