Scunthorpe United 2-1 Gillingham

Gary McSheffrey and Hakeeb Adelakun
Gary McSheffrey won the game after Hakeeb Adelakun had equalised

Gary McSheffrey's winner secured League One survival for Scunthorpe in a match held up for 27 minutes because of torrential rain.

Luke Norris volleyed in off the post to give Gillingham a second-minute lead.

Hakeeb Adelakun made it 1-1 with a shot on the turn, before McSheffrey took on Paddy Madden's pass to score.

Referee Andy Haines took the players off as the pitch became waterlogged, with Gills keeper Glenn Morris saving well from Madden after the restart.

Scunthorpe United assistant manager Ned Kelly told BBC Radio Humberside:

"It's not about relief - it's about always trying to do the job properly. Again, a bit of frustration through the game because we can win the game by five.

"We had a great chance in the first half, we have three or four chances in the second half and we should be sitting here celebrating a four or a five-goal win. Unfortunately we're not, but we've won and that's the most important thing."

On the stoppage of rain: "It was the right thing to do. The referee was first-class in his decision to take us all off and let everything calm down, but you could see it was only a short-term storm anyway and it was going to pass over.

"Fair play to all of the volunteers and the staff throughout the football club."

Gillingham manager Justin Edinburgh told BBC Radio Kent:

"It was quite a bizarre first half. We started very well and then really were the instigators of our downfall, in terms of gifting Scunthorpe two goals.

"Obviously we had to depart the pitch when a deluge of rain came down and then the game fizzled out really.

"We had a lot of possession second half without really creating any chances.

"We never like losing any game - but in the circumstances, it was a strange old game today."
