Former Republic of Ireland international Clinton Morrison has been released by Exeter City.

The 35-year-old striker made 25 appearances for the League Two club but failed to score a goal.

"It's nothing to do with wanting loads of money - I played for free last season," Morrison said on Twitter.

"These things happen in football - I would have loved to stay - I hope next season they get promoted and I hope our paths cross again."

The ex-Crystal Palace and Coventry forward joined Exeter on non-contract terms in November before signing a contract until the end of the season in January.

Morrison had previously said he would probably retire from playing if he could not stay at St James Park.

Despite not naming him on Exeter's retained list, which is due to be announced later this week, manager Paul Tisdale has not ruled out Morrison returning next season.

"Clinton has been a real source of energy for the squad during his time with us and a really vibrant character to work with day-to-day around the training ground," he told the club website.

"Although I can't commit to him at the moment, the door is not completely shut for the future should circumstances be suitable later in the summer."
