Dunfermline: New boss Allan Johnston axes 18 players
Cost-cutting Dunfermline Athletic have released 18 players after their failure to win promotion from Scotland's League One this season.
It follows the appointment of Allan Johnston as manager after John Potter stood down.
The Pars have decided against going part-time, but Johnston revealed that he would have a smaller squad.
"It is going to be tighter, but hopefully we can get better quality," he said.
"I think that is what we need since the league position that we finished in emphasises that it just wasn't good enough.
"We need to freshen up the squad and this is a great opportunity to do that with so many players leaving."
Among those exiting the Fife club are 35-year-old former Dundee United, Motherwell and Plymouth Argyle left-back Jim Paterson, who signed in January.
Also leaving are 30-year-old striker Andrew Barrowman, who was in his second spell at East End Park, 22-year-old former Rangers defender Kyle McAusland and Gregor Buchanan, the 25-year-old centre-half who arrived from Airdrieonians last summer.
Other players exiting East End Park are goalkeepers Ryan Goodfellow and Jamie Wilson, defenders Scott Mercer, Ross Millen, Declan O'Kane, Jonathan Page, Stuart Urquhart and Alex Whittle, midfielders Paul George, Finn Graham, Gavin McMillan, Andy Stirling and Ryan Thomson, plus forward Allan Smith.
