Gillingham boss Justin Edinburgh says he is hopeful of signing QPR defender Max Ehmer on a permanent deal.

The 23-year-old German, who made 29 appearances for the Gills after signing on loan in November, has one year left on his contract with the London club.

"If he becomes available we would love to bring him back here," Edinburgh told BBC Radio Kent.

"There are talks between Max and QPR next week, and if they go to plan then we'll hopefully come to an agreement."

Meanwhile, Edinburgh said that he wanted to retain the majority of his squad after guiding the club to 12th place in League One in 2014-15.

Goalkeeper Stuart Nelson and midfielder Josh Pritchard have both requested to leave the Priestfield side.

"Apart from Josh and Stuart, everyone else that is contracted to this football club is going to play a big part in what we do here next season," he added.

"The squad is a strong squad, with quality and competition."
