Fiorentina have sacked head coach Vincenzo Montella and accused him of a "lack of respect".

Montella, 40, had two years to run on his contract but has been linked with Napoli and AC Milanexternal-link after guiding Fiorentina to fourth in Serie A.

Officials acted after accusing Montella of a lack of commitment.

"We would have expected to see the coach behave in a clearer, more respectful and less ambiguous manner," said a Fiorentina statement.external-link

Former Roma and Italy striker Montella was appointed by Fiorentina in 2012 after they sacked Delio Rossi for attacking his own player Adem Ljajic in a spat over a substitution.

Fiorentina have finished fourth in Serie A in each of the three seasons he has been in charge.

The club will compete in the Europa League group stage next season.

Montella's playing career also included a loan spell at Fulham in 2007 when he was at Roma.
