Gateshead will complete the signing of Nathan Buddle on Monday, after Carlisle United agreed to release the defender from a short-term deal.
Buddle, 21, had signed a contract with the Cumbrians but will instead continue his career at the National League club.
He made his Football League debut for Carlisle on a short-term deal from Blyth Spartans last season, ending the campaign with three appearances.
"I feel I will have a better opportunity to play," Buddle tweeted.
"Which for me is the most important thing. I would just like to say a big thank you to Carlisle United."
Carlisle head of recruitment Lee Dykes told the club website: "We always saw opportunities to play first-team football as part of Nathan's development path. Gateshead was one of the options we were looking at to make sure he got that, particularly at the start of the season.
"Having spoken to the player we feel this will be a really good move for him and it goes without saying we wish him every success in the future."
