Midfielder Phil Turnbull has left Gateshead by mutual consent to take up a job a a physical education teacher at a school in Sunderland.
Turnbull, 28, will move into part-time football with Darlington alongside his work commitments, ending a seven-year second stint with the Tynesiders.
He made more than 300 appearances in total, including the Conference promotion final in 2013-14.
"It has been the hardest decision I've ever had to make," Turnbull said.
"I'd like to hope the fans will remember me for giving everything I had for the club whenever I played, and I leave knowing the club is in a much better position now than when I first joined."
