Preston have added ex-Leeds assistant Steve Thompson to their coaching staff, while striker Kevin Davies has been told he will not be offered a new contract by the Championship club.

Thompson, 50, left Elland Road towards the end of last season.

He previously worked with Preston manager Simon Grayson at Blackpool.

Davies, 38, who won his only England cap in 2010, joined the Lilywhites in 2013 on a two-year deal after 10 years at Bolton Wanderers.

He scored his 150th career goal in February, but that was the only time he netted in 43 appearances as Preston were promoted to the Championship last season.

The former Chesterfield, Southampton and Blackburn forward is now available on a free transfer.

"After waiting for Preston for five weeks just been told no offer," Davies said on Twitter. "Obviously disappointed, great two years. New challenge required, I'm available!!"
