Southend United manager Phil Brown is targeting up to five new signings before the season starts on 8 August.
The Shrimpers were beaten by Braintree in pre-season last week but Brown says he is unconcerned by that defeat.
He told BBC Essex: "Pre-season friendlies are a necessary evil for match fitness, but the players will be ready for the match against Fleetwood Town on 8th August.
"Hopefully we'll also be boosted by three, four or even five new players."
Southend, who won promotion in the League Two play-off final against Wycombe last May, are in transfer talks with former Reading striker Noel Hunt and two players were were on loan at the club last season, Charlton striker Joe Pigott and Nottingham Forest winger Stephen McLaughlin.
Brown said: "The next three weeks are going to be very, very important, in fact until the window closes.
"The chairman has been very supportive. We're trying to get the players in, but it's difficult trying to get them in because of everything that's going on with their situations and our situation, but come the 8th of August we'll be ready."
