Crewe Alexandra: Steve Davis waiting on two defender deals

Steve Davis steered Crewe to League One survival by just two points last season

Crewe Alexandra manager Steve Davis says he should hear this week whether his moves to sign two defenders have been successful.

BBC Radio Stoke reports the Alex are close to sealing loan deals for a left-back from a Premier League club and a centre-back from a Championship side.

"We'll have a better idea this week, we'll talk to the clubs and hopefully have some news either way," Davis said.

"We're dependent on the clubs releasing them but hopefully it will happen."

Davis will soon welcome back striker Marcus Haber following Canada's elimination from the Concacaf Gold Cup tournament.

Ben Garratt, who has not played since February because of a shin injury, is Crewe's only goalkeeper and Davis knows he needs some more new additions before the start of the League One season on 8 August.

"There are certain positions we need to fill - we need another goalkeeper still," Davis told BBC Radio Stoke.

"Marcus is back with us so he'll be an addition but the squad needs a bit of height - we haven't quite got the balance of that right.

"I will try to bring that type of player I've been looking at in and get working with him."
