Leeds United 1-1 Burnley

A late header from substitute Sam Vokes secured Burnley a draw at Leeds on their return to the Championship.

Wales striker Vokes superbly nodded in debutant Tendayi Darikwa's right-wing cross with five minutes remaining to earn a point at Elland Road.

Leeds substitute Mirco Antenucci looked to have given Uwe Rosler a winning start as Leeds head coach, curling in left-footed from 25 yards.

Both Stuart Dallas and Alex Mowatt struck the woodwork for the hosts.

The Clarets, who were relegated from the Premier League in May, had two first-half penalty appeals turned down.

Leeds full-back Charlie Taylor appeared to drag down Burnley striker Lukas Jutkiewicz in the box and then Giuseppe Bellusci handled inside the area under pressure from Jutkiewicz, but neither decision was given by referee Kevin Friend.

Dallas hit the crossbar with a deflected shot, which was the closest that either side came to a goal in the first 45 minutes.

Jutkiewicz, still awaiting his first Burnley goal after failing to score for the club last season, forced a smart stop from goalkeeper Marco Silvestri, while Clarets winger Michael Kightly curled wide from 12 yards.

After Mowatt's low shot had clipped the outside of the post, Antenucci's introduction late in the second half changed the game and the Italian's wonderful long-range effort with eight minutes left looked like being Leeds' winner, until Vokes popped up with the equaliser.

There was still time for Antenucci to test Tom Heaton again from 20 yards, but his right-footed attempt was easily gathered.

Leeds head coach Uwe Rosler: "I am very happy with the way we handled the first day of the season, the big crowd and the atmosphere.

"Everyone contributed to the cause and the tempo from the beginning was very high.

"On the chances we should have won the game but Burnley never gave up in the Premier League and they showed that same quality today."

Burnley manager Sean Dyche: "I was very pleased with Sam's attitude. He has got over his injury and his sharpness is coming back.

"People kept asking how I was going to replace Danny Ings (who joined Liverpool in the summer) but that wasn't bad at all. Having said that, I am looking for goals from all parts of the team.

"It was a really tough fixture on paper and overall I think it was the right result for both teams."
