New signing Alex Fisher scored on his debut as Paul Cox began his reign as Torquay manager with a win.
The striker, released by Mansfield Town at the end of last season, converted from close range after 61 minutes.
Exodus Geoghegan missed a chance to double Torquay's lead when Andy Halls denied him with a fine block, and Fisher headed wide late on.
Macclesfield had come close to taking the lead when Danny Whittaker dragged a good chance wide after four minutes.
