Oxford United striker Ryan Taylor says he has been "surprised" by the strength of his new club's squad since arriving.

Taylor joined the U's from fellow League Two club Portsmouth in May after agreeing a two-year deal.

The 27-year-old is one of five new signings made by manager Michael Appleton during pre-season.

"We're looking very good in training at the moment. I'm looking forward and I'm excited to see what we can produce this season," he told BBC Radio Oxford.

Many of the faces in the Oxford squad are familiar to Taylor, who made 41 appearances for Portsmouth in League Two last season.

"I've played against a lot of these guys before and now I'm looking forward to being involved with them as team-mates," he added.

"There's a lot of expectation here and rightly so with what I've seen so far.

"Hopefully we can push on at the start of this season."

Taylor will hope to shake off an ankle injury sustained in Oxford's final pre-season match against Coventry City as he bids for a starting place against Crawley on Saturday.
