Match ends, Southend United 0, Brighton and Hove Albion 1.
Championship side Brighton secured their League Cup second round spot with a narrow victory over League One outfit Southend.
Winger Kazenga LuaLua was the match winner in injury time with a low finish into the bottom corner of the net.
Daniel Holla almost put the away side ahead in the first half, but saw his free-kick pushed away.
Southend's best chance fell to Anthony Wordsworth whose powerful volley was kept out by goalkeeper Niki Maenpaa.
Brighton boss Chris Hughton told BBC Sussex:
"Probably looking at the game and reflecting on it, these are a team that had a very good season last season, and I am sure they will have another good one and you can see why. A lot of corners and they put us under pressure particularly in the latter part of the game.
"Apart from the super save that Niki (Mäenpää) made there were no clear cut chances that they had. We weren't good enough over the 90 minutes with the ball, and I felt we got in good areas but made the wrong choices.
On LuaLua's goal: ""It was a good finish and at the time in the game everybody was getting tired and was expecting extra-time. A great time to score and one of the bits of quality we showed and it needed something like that to break the deadlock."
