Thistle will be happier with the point

Neither Inverness Caledonian Thistle nor Partick Thistle could make a breakthrough with both still searching for their first victory of the season.

Steven Lawless came closest for the visitors with a confident drive just after an hour that Owain Fon Williams superbly touched on to the bar.

The main threat from the hosts came from Danny Williams, who twice went close with rising drives.

But, despite both sides pushing for a winner, the game ended in stalemate.

Inverness have only one goal in three games, Thistle none, which suggest firepower may be an issue, although both sides will feel they had chances to win this game.

John Hughes' side have been weakened by injury and again didn't name a full complement of substitutes.

The main impact of that is an almost unrecognisable back four from last season, although they stood firm in the end.

It was makeshift centre half Ross Draper who had the first opportunity.

Greg Tansey released Danny Williams on the left, the ball was recycled, Draper thrust from deep, got on the end of a one two and just couldn't find the finish as Tomas Cerny advanced to snuff out the danger.

It was competitive and fairly even throughout, but the visitors came very close to an opener midway through the first half.

Lawless did well on the left, his ball across just evaded David Amoo, Sean Welsh arrived at the back post, but his header skimmed the crossbar and over.

Welsh then found space in a central area, drove into space and lashed one a few yards over the bar.

Alan Archibald's side were hampered by the loss of new striker Mathias Pogba through injury early on.

His replacement, Kris Doolan, fired a fierce low effort from distance that Fon Williams touched round the post.

At the opposite end, Dani Lopez is a striker who needs a break of some sort.

It's arguable he's not getting the service, but the ball doesn't seem to stick and the support remain to be convinced at this early stage.

Meanwhile, Caley Thistle had Fon Williams to thank as Fon Williams superbly touched a Lawless shot on to the bar and away.

The game ebbed and flowed with both sides generating pressure but just lacking that clinical edge to convert.

Williams came within a whisker of scoring for Inverness when he seized on Andrea Mbuyi-Mutombo's blocked shot and fired marginally wide.

New home signing Iain Vigurs almost made an immediate impact form the bench. His long-range free kick arrowed low towards Cerny's right-hand post, but the goalkeeper did well divert it away.

Williams again went close, and perhaps should have done better, when Ryan Christie released him, but the midfielder, playing left back, hesitated slightly then had his effort blocked by Cerny.

Mbuyi Mutombo almost stole the points right the end when he got round Cerny, but a Thistle defender came across and nodded clear as a goal looked increasingly likely.

Goals win games and, for both sides, finding the net is proving problematic.
