Partick Thistle 2-2 Kilmarnock

By John BarnesBBC Scotland at Firhill

A late Kris Boyd header salvaged a draw for Kilmarnock against 10-man Partick Thistle at Firhill.

Kris Doolan opened the scoring for Thistle, capitalising on a Lee Ashcroft mistake, with a Rory McKenzie shot levelling matters before the break.

Liam Lindsay saw red for a tug on Mark O'Hara but Doolan restored the hosts' lead with a calm right-foot finish.

Substitute Boyd then rescued a point for Kilmarnock as he rose highest to head powerfully past Tomas Cerny.

The draw leaves both sides without a Premiership win in four outings, with the Ayrshire side bottom of the standings on goal difference.

The opening goal arrived on nine minutes when Ashcroft made a hash of judging the bounce of the ball at the edge of his own box and he was quickly punished by Doolan, who kept his composure to slot home Thistle's first goal of the season.

Doolan almost increased Thistle's lead with a neat curling shot which bounced back off Jamie MacDonald's right-hand post.

The home side were dominant and it needed a fine save from MacDonald to stop Lindsay's firm header.

Thirty-five minutes had elapsed before Kilmarnock troubled Thistle goalkeeper Cerny. A Josh Magennis effort was pushed away by the Czech and O'Hara's follow-up header was held well.

But, soon after, Killie were level thanks to a great counter-attack. MacDonald made a remarkable point-blank save to deny Steven Lawless and the visitors raced up the park, with McKenzie sticking the ball beyond Cerny.

The visitors could even have taken the lead in first half stoppage-time when Magennis muscled his way into the Thistle box, seeing his shot strike the outside of a post.

The big Killie striker was proving a handful for the home defence and his hold up play helped set up a chance for Kallum Higginbotham early in the second half but the former Thistle player steered his shot wide.

Thistle were reduced to 10 men on 65 minutes when Lindsay was red carded for a foul on O'Hara denying him a goal-scoring opportunity.

Home substitute Gary Fraser then fired in a terrific shot which bounced back off the underside of MacDonald's crossbar.

Fraser then provided the perfect assist for Doolan, crossing for the striker to convert his second of the afternoon, with a well-placed shot.

But Higginbotham, who scored a late penalty equaliser against Celtic on Wednesday, had a big hand in denying his old club in the last five minutes, crossing for Boyd plant a fine downward header into the net.
