James Berrett scored against his former club to give York their first points of the League Two season against Yeovil.
Berrett, who moved from Huish Park in the summer, netted a deflected second-half winner from 20 yards to condemn the Glovers to a sixth straight defeat.
Yeovil goalkeeper Artur Krysiak denied Stephane Zubar from six yards out shortly before half-time.
He was tested again moments later when York midfielder Russell Penn's 20-yard strike forced him into a low save.
York City manager Russ Wilcox told BBC Radio York:
"I'm delighted to get off the mark. I think it's really important. You look at the table now and we're just three points off the play-offs.
"People might chuckle at that, but it's a positive mindset you can put towards the players.
"We were fortuitous with the goal, but if you don't shoot, you don't score."
