Gateshead continued their excellent start to the season as Josh Gillies' penalty secured victory at Southport.
Ryan Bowman scored his fifth goal in four games for the visitors when he headed home from a free-kick.
After Bowman hit the crossbar, Louis Almond's long range strike levelled the game for the Sandgrounders.
Gillies made it three wins from four to start the campaign for the Heed, as he converted from the spot after Bowman was tripped in the area.
Gateshead manager Malcolm Crosby told BBC Newcastle:
"The first half was outstanding, we hit the bar a couple of times and we could have been four or five up.
"The second half was a different game. Southport put us on the back foot and they missed some good chances.
"In the end we got a big, big win.
"I'm very happy because we've had a little bit of criticism even though we've been winning, but I think there's more to come from us."
