Dumbarton 0-2 Queen of the South

By Connie McLaughlinBBC Scotland

Queen of the South went top of the Championship table after scoring a goal in each half against Dumbarton without reply.

Iain Russell tapped home after a cross from Alex Harris and then Derek Lyle secured the points midway through the second half with a header.

Willie Gibson came close for the Sons with a 25-yard shot that whistled wide of the post.

But, unlike Queens, Dumbarton could not make it three wins from three.

The visitors took the initiative through Iain Russell, his cross from the right finding Mark Millar, whose close-range effort was well blocked by goalkeeper Mark Brown.

Dumbarton tried to show some home team authority but had to make do with a shot from outside the box and Gibson's long-range effort whizzed past.

The visitors began to settle and Ryan Conroy had a great opportunity midway through the first half but his shot from the edge of the box was also off target.

The opener was not far away, though, as Harris delivered from the right and all Russell had to do was apply the finish. He kept calm and slotted passed Brown.

The second duly arrived after the break. Some poor defending from the Dumbarton defence allowed Lyle the space and time to pick his spot and Brown had no chance.
