Notts County's Alan Smith believes fellow Magpies midfielder Liam Noble has a "big future" ahead of him if he can improve his disciplinary record.

Smith, 34, has been mentoring Noble, who picked up 15 bookings and three red cards in 38 appearances last season.

The 24-year-old has scored twice in three games so far this term, but has already been shown two yellow cards.

"I think the start of the season he's had has been really positive," Smith told BBC Radio Nottingham.

Former England international Smith has been sent off 13 times in his career to date, but he has not been shown a red card since August 2012.

"I've been in that situation myself where sometimes your football gets overshadowed by other things that happen on the field," he added.

"You don't ever want to take away the competitive edge that he's got which we all love him for, but he is a better footballer than people give him credit for.

"I think if he can stay out of trouble he's got a big future in the game."
