Match ends, Sheffield Wednesday 1, Middlesbrough 3.
Middlesbrough withstood a second-half fight-back from Sheffield Wednesday to claim a deserved Championship win.
Adam Reach put the visitors ahead when he lashed home a close-range finish from Grant Leadbitter's corner.
The home side improved after half-time and soon equalised through Marco Matias's deflected shot.
But Diego Fabbrini put Boro back in front after a swift counter-attack, and Christian Stuani sealed it late on with a composed finish into the far corner.
Boro bossed the first half, with goalkeeper Lewis Price coming to Wednesday's rescue when he tipped over Daniel Ayala's close-range header from Adam Clayton's great cross.
Stewart Downing glanced a header wide from Reach's cross before Price again saved superbly from Reach's drilled shot.
But Price could do nothing about the opening goal as sloppy defending allowed Leadbitter's corner to find Reach in space, who powered home a left-foot shot.
The hosts responded strongly after the break, Alex Lopes shooting inches wide and forcing a great save from Dimitrios Konstantopoulos, before Matias equalised from Jack Hunt's great cross.
But the visitors were back in front just three minutes later when a corner was cleared out to Fabbrini, who raced clear from the halfway line and slotted a finish into the bottom corner.
Stuani sealed victory, shooting across Price into the far corner after good work from substitute David Nugent, and Adam Forshaw almost added a fourth in injury time when he headed against a post.
Wednesday head coach Carlos Carvalhal: "We played against one of the strongest teams in the Championship and we played very soft.
"We gave the ball to the opponents in the first 45 minutes and then we changed things. We tried to be more aggressive.
"There was a strong reaction and we started to create opportunities. The big lesson we must take from the game is that we must play from the beginning.
Middlesbrough head coach Aitor Karanka: "I am proud of my team. All the players did well because it was a difficult game, especially after our defeat last Saturday at home.
"This season I have players on the bench who can change games like Adam Forshaw, (Christian) Stuani and David Nugent. You feel that they can make a difference on the pitch.
"When players are on the bench sometimes they are not happy, but they understand and they are always fighting for each other."
