Lewis Allan put the visitors ahead against the run of play, firing across goal into the bottom corner.
Craig Moore levelled with a well-controlled volley and Alan Forrest shaped a low shot into the bottom corner to give Ayr the lead.
Forfar's equaliser came in the final moments as Travis converted from close range from Iain Campbell's free-kick.
