Coventry City 2-2 Southend United

Coventry City's Reda Johnson
Reda Johnson joined Coventry from Sheffield Wednesday in July 2014

Sam Ricketts denied Southend United their first win of the season after they had come from behind to take the lead at Coventry City.

Reda Johnson volleyed the hosts ahead after Adam Armstrong had a header cleared off the line.

Southend drew level when Noel Hunt headed home Ben Coker's cross before David Mooney's penalty put them ahead.

United keeper Daniel Bentley then kept out Jim O'Brien's spot kick only for Ricketts to nod in the equaliser.

Coventry City manager Tony Mowbray told BBC Coventry & Warwickshire:

"We're all disappointed in the dressing room, especially in the first half. You can't win leagues by playing such open football, although it was probably a good spectacle. We need to play more like we did in the second half.

"Overall they deserve the point. They worked hard enough. They're a decent side. We'll take the point: we've got 10 points from five games and if you can do that over the course of a season that should be good enough for promotion.

"The fans lifted the team in the second half. If we can keep the entertainment high and stop the goals going into our net then hopefully the fans will keep coming. We've got to keep being a decent football team in this league, and to stay at the top end, and to work on the things we need to."
