Rodney Sneijder made one competitive appearance for Dundee United as a substitute

Rodney Sneijder has left Dundee United with his contract at the club terminated by mutual agreement.

The Dutch midfielder, 24 moved to Tannadice from Almere City on a two-year deal in July.

He made one competitive appearance, as a 72nd-minute substitute against Aberdeen, but then returned to the Netherlands on medical grounds.

It was reported that Sneijder, younger brother of Galatasaray star Wesley, was suffering from a viral infection.

Manager Jackie McNamara said on the Dundee United website: "This is the best solution for Rodney first and foremost. We have a responsibility to protect the player's health moving forward and respect his current situation.

"Everyone at Dundee United wishes Rodney all the very best for the future.

"The club will replace any replica shirt which has been purchased from Dundee United Direct and customised with the player's name."
