Plymouth Argyle right-back Kelvin Mellor says the loan signing of Bolton Wanderers defender Oscar Threlkeld will keep him sharp.

Mellor, 24, has been an Argyle regular since joining last summer and was the only recognised right-back at the club until Threlkeld arrived on Thursday.

"You've got to get that consistency and having someone else there would have an effect on you," Mellor told BBC Devon.

"You want to do better than the person that comes in."

Mellor has been part of a defensive unit that has conceded just one goal from open play in the league this season, a defensive record has seen the Pilgrims win three of their first four games and sit third in League Two.

"We've got off to a bit of a flyer, but we can't get carried away," added the former Crewe full-back. "We get judged on the goals we concede, so I think we have got off to a good start.

"We know the forwards and midfielders are going to score goals, and that's what will win us games, but we need to keep clean sheets really."
