Cliftonville manager Tommy Breslin has moved to strengthen his attacking options by signing Larne striker Ciaran Murray for an undisclosed fee.

Murray scored an impressive 34 goals in 36 appearances for Larne but is not eligible to play in Wednesday night's JBE League Cup tie against Dundela.

The 27-year-old moved to the Inver Park-based Championship One outfit from Immaculata in July 2014.

Murray smashed 41 goals for the Amateur League side in the previous season.

He was also previously on the books of Donegal Celtic.

Breslin has been on the lookout for a forward since the departure of Joe Gormley to Peterborough United but was unable to prise Darren Murray away from Portadown in the summer.

"Ciaran has proven himself as a very capable goalscorer since taking the step up from Amateur League football and is keen to test himself at a higher level," said Breslin.

"I'm pleased to be able to bring him to Cliftonville and have the utmost confidence in his ability to perform in the Premiership."

Meanwhile Glentoran manager Eddie Patterson has pounced to sign midfielder Ciaran Caldwell from Glenavon.

Carrick Rangers have agreed a one-year deal with ex-Linfield and Glenavon player Brian McCaul, who played for Ballymena United last season.

The tie involving holders Cliftonville is one of three second round matches taking place on Wednesday night.

Newington face Dungannon Swifts and Warrenpoint are at home to Lisburn Distillery in the other two games.
