Burnley 3-1 Sheffield Wednesday

Burnley picked up a third win in a row to move into the Championship top six after a hard-fought victory against Sheffield Wednesday.

David Jones put Burnley ahead early on with a free-kick past debutant Wednesday goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith.

Atdhe Nuhiu headed the visitors level from Daniel Pudil's delicate cross.

Matthew Taylor fired Burnley back in front in the second half before record signing Andre Gray scored his first goal for the club in stoppage time.

Wednesday manager Carlos Carvalhal made seven changes to the side which lost 3-1 against Middlesbrough before the international break.

Among them was 19-year-old keeper Wildsmith, whose first act was to pick Jones's unstoppable left-foot strike out of the net.

The Owls responded midway through the first-half with Nuhiu's first league goal of the season.

Fernando Forestieri saw a header cleared before the interval as Wednesday threatened to take the lead, whilst Gray went close to scoring on his home debut as Wildsmith pushed an effort behind for a corner.

Wednesday took their confidence into the second half and Forestieri was involved again, firing a shot inches over Tom Heaton's bar, but Burnley weathered the storm and made the visitors pay in the closing stages.

Taylor raced on to Gray's through ball to restore the lead, and then Gray sealed the points after he robbed defender Liam Palmer on the byline before cutting inside and driving into the net.

Burnley manager Sean Dyche:

"In the first half, I didn't think there was much in it.

"We had a couple of great chances, which we didn't capitalise on and in the first 20 minutes of the second half, I thought they were very good.

"They made us work for what we had and they got our organisation off kilter.

"Slowly but surely I could sense it. I thought we're getting back on top and a fine stand up from Andre Gray for Matty Taylor's goal and then the rawness that Andre's got is a powerful weapon and he goes after things that others maybe wouldn't."

Sheffield Wednesday manager Carlos Carvalhal:

"If you ask me if I'm happy with the draw, probably I would say I'm a little upset with the draw.

"But the reality is that we lost a match that we played very well and we created a lot of chances.

"I believe everyone in the stadium, in a big period of the second half, was waiting for the second goal of Sheffield Wednesday. But this is football.

"The quality of the game was very good. We missed some chances so we must do better in efficiency and of course we must correct the defensive mistakes that we did and we can't do these kind of defensive mistakes."
