Southend United 0-1 Shrewsbury Town

Shrewsbury Town defender Nat Knight-Percival
Knight-Percival missed the latter half of Shrewsbury's promotion season with a cruciate knee ligament injury

Nat Knight-Percival's second-half header gave Shrewsbury Town a deserved League One win at Southend.

The recalled centre-back nodded in Liam Lawrence's free-kick after the visitors had edged an uneventful first half.

Southend went close when Anthony Wordsworth thundered a 20-yard shot against the post.

But Shrewsbury could have won by more, being denied only by Daniel Bentley, who saved excellently from Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro (twice) and James Collins.

Micky Mellon's promoted side, who picked up just two points from their first five games back in League One, climb to 15th after their second straight win.

Shrewsbury Town assistant manager Michael Jackson told BBC Radio Shropshire:

"We've had a look at things over the past few weeks and changed a few things too. Obviously, we've gone up a level, but maybe we hadn't been pushing ourselves so far.

"We are trying to fit the players in who will give us that bit more going forward and I'm delighted with how our players have worked.

"Natty is a great professional. It's not just his goal. He got a decent block in at the end and I'm delighted to welcome him back into the team."
