Northampton ended Morecambe's four-game winning run in all competitions with a comfortable victory at the Globe Arena.
Lawson D'Ath volleyed the Cobblers ahead and Sam Hoskins made it 2-0 from David Buchanan's cross.
Joel Byrom extended Town's lead when his free-kick from the right touchline sailed straight in, before Tom Barkhuizen replied with a header.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin's backheel made it 4-1 before Joel Byrom deflected Kevin Ellison's cross into his own net.
Northampton manager Chris Wilder told BBC Radio Northampton:
"It was an even start, but as soon as we scored we took the game away from them.
"We're a touch disappointed with some of the goals we conceded but overall it's a great result.
"We won't get carried away. It's a good weekend for us and our supporters but we need to show consistency against Leyton Orient."
