Xavier Vidal's long-range effort and a Sam Russell own goal helped Welling battle to a 2-1 victory at Gateshead.
Vidal's free-kick deflected in off Heed goalkeeper Russell, and the midfielder doubled the lead with a powerful strike from 25 yards out.
Nathan Buddle put the hosts back in contention before the break, heading in from Josh Gillies' corner.
Gateshead struggled to create chances in the second half, as Welling climbed out of the relegation zone.
Gateshead manager Malcolm Crosby told BBC Newcastle:
"It's a poor result. We didn't play particularly well and lacked a little bit of sharpness.
"It's been a tough old week; we've been to Eastleigh, come back to play Wrexham and I thought some of the lads looked a bit tired.
"Their second goal was disappointing because we felt we should have had a throw in before the ball ended up in our net."
