Sunderland 1-4 Manchester City

Raheem Sterling and Kevin de Bruyne cost Manchester City a combined £99m

Manchester City swept aside Sunderland in the League Cup third round to add to Black Cats boss Dick Advocaat's woes.

Sergio Aguero opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Patrick van Aanholt fouled Jesus Navas.

Kevin de Bruyne shot past Vito Mannone, who then scored an unwitting own goal when Raheem Sterling's shot hit the post, struck him and went in.

Sterling completed the first-half rout from De Bruyne's cross, before Ola Toivonen netted a late consolation.

This was a fifth defeat in eight matches for Sunderland, who are bottom of the Premier League before their trip to Manchester United on Saturday.

By contrast, City rebounded impressively from their first defeat of the season against West Ham on Saturday.

Record signing De Bruyne was once again influential on only his second start for the club.

For Sunderland, the sole bright spot was the performance of debutant full-back DeAndre Yedlin, who supplied the cross for Toivonen's goal.

Sunderland manager Dick Advocaat:

"Maybe you think I am negative, but the way we played in the first 25 minutes was very positive.

"I was not really happy with the way that we again gave the goals away, and it's not the first time, but there's no sense in calling names because everybody could see the mistakes, simple mistakes and it's not possible to make those mistakes at this level, especially not against a team like that.

"The quality from the other side was too much."

Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini:

"It was important to win the way we did today because we have just come from two important defeats, one in the Champions League and the other in the Premier League, so it was important to start this Capital One Cup in the way that we did in the first half.

"It's important to win. Maybe we didn't deserve to lose the two games that we lost, but we did, so it was important not to continue in that sense."
