Rotherham United moved off the bottom of the Championship table with an impressive win against Birmingham at St Andrew's.

Matt Derbyshire put Rotherham ahead when he volleyed home from Joe Newell's back-post cross.

Rotherham doubled their lead after the break when Tony Andreu superbly fired past Blues keeper Tomasz Kuszczak.

Clayton Donaldson came close to finding a consolation for Blues but his effort went just wide.

Victory was the Millers' second in successive games and moves them up to 20th place, while Birmingham slip to ninth after a fourth game in a row without a win.

Blues started brightly, and Jon Toral's powerful strike from distance forced a save from Millers goalkeeper Lee Camp.

At the other end, Kuszczak denied Jonson Clarke-Harris and then parried efforts from Newell and Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe.

But the visitors went ahead when Newell was allowed to cross the ball to Derbyshire, who superbly volleyed home.

Rotherham were gifted a second when Stephen Gleeson hesitated with the ball and Andreu capitalised to score his first goal for the club.

The hosts tried to work their way back into the game and were almost rewarded when Paul Caddis's ball found Donaldson, but his effort went the wrong side of the post.

Birmingham manager Gary Rowett: "Firstly you have to congratulate Rotherham for doing an excellent job away from home.

"Secondly, did Tuesday night at Aston Villa expend a lot of energy and did it take a little away from the players in terms of the zip and verve we play? It is difficult to manage that sort of situation.

"I thought we were flat after one or two minutes. You could see that we didn't get our defensive shape or move up the pitch quickly enough."

Rotherham manager Steve Evans: "We set the tone in the first minute and it was all about us. We controlled the game from start to finish.

"Too many people wrote us off after a bad start and it was disappointing to see people say we are going to be relegated.

"We cannot forget coming to the likes of Birmingham and play as well as we did, and to win it is a great day for us."
