McLeod capitalised on an error by York goalkeeper Scott Flinders after 12 minutes to give Ricardo Moniz's Magpies all three points.
Liam Noble's long ball was mis-kicked by Flinders to give the former Derby forward a simple finish.
James Berrett had York's best chance but Roy Carroll saved, while Mike Edwards hit the post for Notts.
