Plymouth Argyle manager Derek Adams says Carl McHugh's hamstring injury is not as bad as first feared.

The 22-year-old Irish defender was hurt in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Bristol Rovers and Adams feared McHugh could be set for lengthy spell out.

"He looks like he'll be out for a couple of weeks, which is better than we first feared," Adams said.

"He's been an important player for us this season and we're hopeful that we can get him back quite soon."

Adams is also hopeful that Deane Smalley could return to action next month.

Smalley damaged his cruciate knee ligaments last December having joined the club on a two-year deal in the summer of 2014.

"We'll look to get a game with him in the Peninsula League around October-time," Adams told BBC Radio Devon.

"We'll then look to November-time for reserve games and then we'll take it from there."
