Torquay United 0-2 Aldershot Town

By Brent PilnickBBC South West Sport

Kevin Nicholson's first game in charge of Torquay United ended in a toothless defeat at home to Aldershot.

Sam Hatton's free-kick from 25 yards beat Fabien Speiss to give the Shots the lead midway through the first half.

Charlie Walker curled in the second after good inter-play between him and Rhys Browne on the edge of the Gulls penalty area.

Substitute Richard Brodie should have made it three late on but he missed a chance from the edge of the area.

The loss means Torquay drop to third-from-bottom in the National League and have gone 11 games without a win.

Aldershot boss Barry Smith told BBC Surrey:

"After last week's performance we asked them for a reaction and they certainly delivered that today and it's credit to that group of players because they responded in the right fashion. You saw that everyone was wanting the ball and we scored some great goals.

"We were right at it from the very first minute. We got a free-kick within seconds of the game and that showed our intention from the off to be positive and we pressed them when we could. It's credit with the response they showed.

"We know what Rhys Browne is capable of and he had a hand in both of the goals. We want to focus on the good things he does and he creates the space for the team. He's not used to senior football and we must protect him to a certain degree."
