Joe Pigott's fifth goal in four games saw Southend United edge out Port Vale.
Pigott, on loan from Charlton Athletic, struck midway through the second half when he bundled in Anthony Wordsworth's cross from close range.
He also saw a shot deflected on to the post before strike partner Myles Weston fired wide when clean through.
For Vale, Uche Ikpeazu's goalbound effort was blocked by home skipper John White as the Shrimpers claimed a fifth win in six matches.
