Walsall 1-2 Chesterfield

Sylvan Ebanks-Blake
Sylvan Ebanks-Blake's third goal of the season set Chesterfield on their way to victory.

Chesterfield shocked Walsall to knock the Saddlers off the top of the League One table with a hard-fought win.

Sylvan Ebanks-Blake opened the scoring with a free header from Chris Herd's cross to stun the hosts.

Walsall struck the woodwork twice in a commanding spell but failed to score before Chesterfield's Ian Evatt rose to head in from Dan Gardner's corner.

The Saddlers had the majority of the chances but could only manage a late consolation through Matt Preston.

Walsall boss Dean Smith told BBC WM:

"After they scored the first, which was sloppy, poor defending by us, we took over the game and it became a bit like a training session - attack versus defence.

"Their keeper has made two great saves and we've hit the woodwork four times. It was one of those games where it wasn't meant to be.

"It is hard chasing back from 2-0 down, but the lads gave it their all and they kept going. For long periods of the game there was one team trying to score a goal and the other team trying to spoil it and slow it down."
