Gillingham 2-1 Scunthorpe United

Justin Edinburgh
Justin Edinburgh's Gillingham are two points clear of Walsall in League One

Ten-man Gillingham remained top of League One after coming from 1-0 behind to beat in-form Scunthorpe United.

Harry Lennon converted Bradley Dack's free-kick in stoppage time to secure victory for Gillingham, who had Josh Wright sent off with nine minutes left.

Scott Laird met Scott Wiseman's cross with a powerful left-footed shot to put the visitors ahead after half-time.

Substitute Brennan Dickenson headed in Dack's corner to equalise for the Gills before their dramatic winner.

Scunthorpe, who had won their previous three games, edged a goalless first half with Gary McSheffrey twice going close and Murray Wallace heading over.

But they could not make the most of their numerical advantage in the closing stages following Wright's lunge on Paddy Madden, as Gillingham took the lead and then keeper Stuart Nelson kept out another Wallace header in the final seconds.

Scunthorpe boss Mark Robins told BBC Radio Humberside:

Mark Robins on Gillingham v Scunthorpe

"I think we ran over two or three black cats on the way here, we went under a ladder - honestly it's incredible. How have we not got anything from that game? It just beggars belief.

"I know we've got to defend two set-plays and ultimately we've got to defend them but they get a free-kick out of nothing. They put a ball into the box and it's a great delivery and we haven't dealt with that.

"All of a sudden you're 2-1 down and we get a chance right at the death and the keeper's thrown his arm up and I don't know how he's saved it.

"At times it can be a cruel game, but let's be positive and know that these are top of the league and we've come to their backyard and outplayed them."
