Peter Whittingham says the team spirit in the current Cardiff City side is as good as the squad that won promotion to the Premier League three seasons ago.

The Bluebirds are currently just two points outside the play-off places, having lost only two Championship games so far this season.

The midfielder, 31, thinks they are similarities with the team that went all the way under ex-boss Malky Mackay.

"It's great at the minute, everyone's so together," Whittingham said.

"The boys will go out together after training and be together, play golf, it is great spirit to have.

"It's probably similar to the year we went up. Everyone was together and there were no cliques.

"The two sides are similar. You need a bit of luck in certain games. But it's about grinding out results and winning our games at home.

"There'll be teams looking at us now being hard to beat.

"We're a good team, we know that. We've got to deal with that at our stadium as teams are going to come and be patient but we've got to deal with that and get results."

Cardiff travel to Preston North End on Saturday in the league, then face second-placed Middlesbrough at home on Tuesday.
