Rochdale and Oldham shared the points at Spotland, after a goalless draw.
The home side created an early chance through Lewis Alessandra, whose shot from five yards went over the crossbar.
Oldham's best opportunity came when James Wilson headed Mike Jones' free-kick wide, before Jamie Allen's corner for Rochdale was diverted onto the post by Latics goalkeeper David Cornell.
There were few chances in the second-half with Cornell saving a shot by Nathaniel Mendez-Laing.
Rochdale manager Keith Hill told BBC Radio Manchester:
"In my opinion I think there were too many breaks in play, there was no continuity for it for the supporters to really get involved in an exciting game.
"Two teams turned up to play and it was affected by the amount of fouls, silly cheap fouls that maybe on another day the referee would have been turned a blind eye to.
"I think that the referee got card happy in the second half."
Oldham Athletic manager David Dunn told BBC Radio Manchester:
"You can never underestimate a point away at Rochdale.
"I thought it was a typical derby with tackles flying in. Of course we want to be better on the ball but Keith's teams are always hard to play against.
"Why wouldn't you have confidence, when you're performing well? There is a real belief now we are getting in the changing room.
"It took a while to get because of their performances and the results before we came. I'm not saying I'm a miracle worker, not for one minute."
