Bristol Rovers 1-4 Newport County

Zak Ansah (centre) celebrates his goal fro Newport
Zak Ansah (centre) ended his nine-match run without a goal for Newport

Newport County climbed off the bottom of League Two with a comprehensive victory in the Severnside derby.

Tom Parkes headed into his own net from a harmless cross to put the visitors ahead, but Billy Bodin's 25-yard strike 83 seconds later brought Rovers level.

Newport's second was another gift as home goalkeeper Lee Nicholls dropped the ball at Zak Ansah's feet, and the striker added a second moments later.

Tommy O'Sullivan's long-range effort secured County's second win in a row.

Newport had not won successive games in League Two since January, and Ansah had not scored since joining the club on loan in August.

Newport County manager John Sheridan told BBC Radio Wales:

"I thought we looked good on the counter attack and caused them a lot of problems and should have scored more goals.

"Those are two tough away games we've just won and to pick maximum points is a good feeling - it's not one they've felt too often.

"It's important they enjoy it. This gets us out of the bottom two but we know the important of going on a run of games of performing well. if we do that, we've got a chance of winning games."
