Luton Town captain Steve McNulty has joined National League side Tranmere Rovers on loan to be closer to his family.
The 32-year-old has made 124 appearances for the Hatters since signing from Fleetwood in January 2013.
The deal is set to be made permanent when the January transfer window opens.
"In the end, it was decided that it was in everyone's best interests for this to happen," Luton manager John Still told BBC Three Counties Radio.
"I'm disappointed for us, but in a funny way I'm pleased for him.
"For him personally, it's the right thing to do, and I felt and the club felt we had to show the right amount of compassion for his situation."
