Jonathan Kodjia heads Bristol City's winner against Wolves just before half-time

Jonathan Kodjia's header on the stroke of half-time earned Bristol City a vital three points against Wolves.

City's win moved them four points clear of the Championship's bottom three.

French striker Kodjia powered home his eighth goal of the season after a fine cross from former Wolves trainee Elliott Bennett.

Wolves rarely threatened, with Grant Holt's shot from 18 yards kept out by Frank Fielding and Dave Edwards' follow-up ruled offside.

It was only City's second home win of the season and their third in total, but one which eases the pressure on manager Steve Cotterill.

Chances were at a premium in a quiet first half, with Korey Smith shooting straight at Wolves goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez before Kodjia nodded the hosts in front.

After Holt's shot, City threatened through Kieran Agard and Kodjia's low strike across goal, which forced a smart save from Martinez.

Despite injury-time pressure from Wolves and a late penalty claim, for a possible foul on Matt Doherty, City held on to end a run of 12 games without a victory over Wolves.

Kenny Jackett's Wolves drop a place back to 14th after their fourth defeat in five games, seven points off the play-offs.

Bristol City manager Steve Cotterill: "After Saturday there was a huge challenge ahead of us and the supporters, and I felt both came through it with flying colours.

"The patience to keep the ball was important. It was always going to be a tough game. We showed great patience. I had just written down that we needed a bit more zip and tempo and two minutes later we actually produced it.

"Frank only made one save. The defence were rock solid. They didn't give Wolves a look at our goal. It was a good night for the club. The supporters will go home happy and go to work happy. They've been fantastic all season."

Wolves head coach Kenny Jackett: "The only complaint I can have is that it was a penalty at the end in injury time on Matt Doherty.

"I've seen it again. Matt has got to the ball first and he's brought down by the defender. It was the 93rd minute. That's the only incident I felt we were hard done by.

"In both halves, we didn't work Bristol City's goalkeeper nearly enough. We couldn't break them down. When they got the first goal we put to two up front to affect them but, going forward, we didn't link the play, looked flat and didn't trouble their goalkeeper."
