Scunthorpe striker Paddy Madden bagged a brace to beat Southend and send his side into the FA Cup second round.
Madden latched onto Luke Williams' corner to fire the Iron into the lead before Ryan Leonard's shot from the edge of the area drew Southend level.
The Shrimpers failed to clear another corner on 78 minutes, allowing Madden to win it from close range for the Iron with his 12th goal of the season.
Southend manager Phil Brown was sent to the stand just before full-time.
Scunthorpe United manager Mark Robins talking to BBC Radio Humberside's Mike White:
"It wasn't great. A typical FA Cup tie at times.
"We were on the back foot in the first half, but in the second half we came out and finished the job off.
"Paddy Madden's two goals were outstanding, certainly the second one, because he waited the time to shoot."
