Sheffield Wed 3-1 Huddersfield Town

Lucas Joao
Lucas Joao scored twice for the Owls in their win over Huddersfield

Substitute Lucas Joao scored twice as Sheffield Wednesday came from behind to beat Huddersfield, who made a losing start under new coach David Wagner.

Joao came on with Wednesday 1-0 down to a Sean Scannell header, and levelled when he crashed in the rebound from Fernando Forestieri's initial shot.

Forestieri then teed up Kieran Lee to put Wednesday ahead, and his cutback gave Joao the chance to seal the win.

Wednesday move within a point of the Championship play-off places.

For Town, only goals scored keeps them above the relegation zone after a fifth game without a win in the Championship.

Wagner's side folded once conceding, having looked solid if unspectacular in the first half.

After a turgid first 45 minutes, in which there were as many bookings as shots on target - three - Wednesday enjoyed a string of half chances, but Scannell's header was the catalyst that finally sparked the game into life.

Wednesday boss Carlos Carvahal sent on Joao, Gary Hooper and Lewis McGugan, and their presence proved crucial as the game turned.

After Hooper shot tamely at goalkeeper Joe Murphy, Joao finally found the equaliser at Hillsborough after Forestieri's strike was saved.

The goal buoyed Wednesday as the influential Forestieri created the opening for Lee to smash in after a goalmouth scramble before Joao scored a third in injury time.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Carlos Carvalhal:

"I think we deserved to win the game. We showed that we have a strong team. The strong teams can do what we did today.

"We started very well in the second half and after Huddersfield scored, it was a fantastic reaction.

"We won because of fantastic teamwork. All the players played their part. We win with the team and not with individual players.

"We must only talk about game by game and the most important game is the next one."

Huddersfield head coach David Wagner:

"In the last 20 minutes, we have to be honest and say that Sheffield Wednesday were very strong. In that time they beat us.

"The first 70 minutes was a step in the right direction. We needed a better performance in the last 20 minutes.

"There were a lot of good moments for us in the game. We had very good transition moments and I think we defended well for a long time.

"We like to create a new style and for this you need unbelievably good fitness. That is what we are working towards."
